Nearly 5 million sign petition to alter constitution: Myanmar opposition

<p>Myanmar's main opposition party, the National League for Democracy (NLD), has claimed that it has collected 4.94 million signatures demanding to amend Section-436 of Myanmar's 2008 state constitution, the NLD said on Thursday.</p><p><br><br>The section-436 prescribes that constitution amendment need the approval of more than 75 percent of all parliament members (MPs).</p><p><br><br>The signatures were collected from 295 townships in 14 regions and states in support of the amendment and will be sent to the parliament for consideration, NLD senior leaders said, stressing that the constitutional amendment be done before 2015 when the next general election is to be held.</p> Read the full article here: Shanghai Daily
