Constitution revision and peace process are interconnected says Daw Aung San Suu Kyi

The peace process is key for the reform of the military drafted 2008 Constitution, said Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, State Counsellor and foreign minister of Myanmar. This is reflected in the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement stipulating that the Constitution would be amended as a result of the Union Peace Conference. The first round of the Conference talks took place in November 2015, the second one is scheduled to start on 24th May. According to the rules currently in force, the Constitution can be amended only with the participation of the members of military what impairs any attempt on amending section 59(f) of the Basic Law to allow Aung San Suu Kyi becoming a president. More time may be needed to lead a peaceful transition towards a federal democratic union. Such transition should abide by the rule of law which guarantees stability in the country, said Aung San Suu Kyi.
