La Constitution de 1999, modifiée en 2004,interdisait au président Tandja de solliciter un troisième mandat. Leprésident propose une révision constitutionnelle de grande ampleur afin de se maintenir à la présidence. La nouvelleConstitution est approuvée par référendum le 4 août 2009. Mais l'opposition grandit dans le pays et le président estrenversé par un coup d'État militaire le 18 février 2010. Un Conseil suprême pour la restauration de la démocratie estformé, dont une ordonnance détermine les pouvoirs pendant la période de transition. Cet organisme a fait procéder à larédaction d'une nouvelle Constitution qui à la suite du référendum du 31 octobre 2010 est devenue la Constitution de laVIIe République

The 1999 Constitution amended in 2004 prohibited President Tandja from seeking a third term in office. The president proposed a far-reaching revision of the constitution in order to maintain his presidency. The new Constitution was approved by referendum on 4 August 2009. Opposition grew in the country and the president was overthrown by a military coup on 18 February 2010. A Supreme Council for the Restoration of Democracy was formed, whose powers during the transition period were defined in an ordinance. This body commissioned the drafting of a new Constitution which, following the referendum of 31 October 2010, became the Constitution of the Seventh Republic.
