Sri Lanka's president dissolves parliament and announces new elections under constitution

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has exercised his constitutional powers to dissolve the Parliament of Sri Lanka.  This decision, effective from midnight on 24th September, was made under Article 70 of the Constitution of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and in accordance with Section 10 of the Parliamentary Elections Act, No. 1 of 1981. The President has set the date for the election of new Members of Parliament for November 14, 2024.
