South Korean President Lee Jae Myung said Friday he remains open to shortening his presidential term if doing so is necessary to secure a constitutional amendment, while reiterating his support for changing the presidency to a four-year term system.
Lee said on X that accepting a shorter presidential term if necessary for constitutional reform was his official position during the 2022 presidential campaign and that his view has not changed.
"My campaign pledge and consistent position have been to amend the Constitution in a way that strengthens local autonomy and the fundamental rights of the people," Lee wrote.
Lee said there is broad public agreement that South Korea's Constitution, which has remained largely unchanged for nearly four decades, no longer fully reflects the needs of the times.
