In Colombia, president eyes constitutional change after congress rejects reform agenda

Colombian President Gustavo Petro on Friday proposed changing the constitution in the face of a refusal by the opposition-controlled Congress to approve elements of his reform agenda. The leftist president, in power since August 2022, has failed to convince members of congress to give the green light to his bills aimed at modifying the South American nation's health, pension and labor systems. "If the institutions we have today in Colombia are not capable of living up to the social reforms that the people decreed through their vote... then Colombia has to go to a National Constituent Assembly," he said to a gathering of Indigenous people who support him in the city of Cali.
