Women's groups in Zambia support proposed change of electoral system

Over the years, women and other groups have been advocating and lobbying for changes to the electoral system for the country to achieve 50:50 representation of women and men in Parliament. Currently, Zambia has been using the first-past-the-post electoral system (FPPS) where women, youth and people with disabilities have not been able to fully participate. The FPPS has disadvantaged women’s participation in decision- making, as evidenced by their low numbers in parliament which stand at a meagre 19 out of a total of 158.
