Thailand's government announces charter amendment process unlikely to be completed this term

The government has admitted that efforts to draft a new charter are unlikely to be completed during its term. Addressing questions involving charter reforms from Thewarit Maneechai, PM's Office Minister Chousak Sirinil said the process has been stalled due to disagreements over the number of referendums required. Mr Chousak, also the ruling Pheu Thai Party's legal expert, said that the Constitutional Court has not yet ruled on the matter and if the court determines that only two rounds are sufficient, the process can move forward. However, he expressed concerns that the existing rules make any charter amendments extremely difficult, particularly the requirement that one-third of senators must approve the changes.
