In Switzerland, constitutional referendum on mandatory military service for women fails

Amid heightened security concerns across European countries, Switzerland, a neutral nation, put a constitutional amendment proposing mandatory military service for women to a public vote, but it was rejected by a majority of citizens. According to the Swiss Federal Assembly, the "citizen service system" proposal, voted on September 30, was defeated with 84.15% opposition and 15.85% support. The voter turnout was 42.94%. [ . . . ] Switzerland, a neutral country like the divided nation of South Korea, adopts a conscription system. Men aged 18–34 are obligated to serve. Approximately 35,000 men are conscripted annually. The Swiss Federal Constitution stipulates, "All Swiss men are obligated to serve in the military. Women may voluntarily serve." The defeated amendment aimed to revise this to "all persons with Swiss citizenship."
