Swaziland: Senate President says Constitution needs to be Amended

<p>Senate President Gelane Zwane told senators that the Constitution needs to be amended. She pointed out Section 2 which requires that every citizen of the country, including King Mswati III, must uphold and defend the Constitution. Section 2(3) states that therefore, any person who suspends, overthrows or abrogates it commits the offence of treason.</p><p><br><br><br>Zwane made her statement on the backdrop of a Senate motion last week in Parliament to the effect that the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Sibusiso Shongwe, should submit a comprehensive report to Senate detailing the ministry’s civic education and awareness plan. The motion was raised by Senator Prince Fipha who was seconded by Senator Michael Temple.</p>
