President of Democratic Republic of the Congo defends constitutional reform in parliament

The president of the Democratic Republic of Congo pressed his case for "constitutional reform" in parliament Wednesday despite the opposition condemning his move as an attempt to stay in power. [ . . . ] "No one is going to change my position on the revision or change of the constitution," Tshisekedi said last month in the southeastern city of Lubumbashi. The opposition has denounced the move as a "constitutional coup d'etat" and accuses the president of seeking a third term. Leading opponents have pledged "demonstrations across the country". Changes to the constitution must be approved in a referendum called by the president, unless the proposed change is backed by three-fifths of parliamentarians.
