Polish parliament to vote key law on Judicial Council and judicial independence

Poland’s clash with its European partners over the rule of law is set to deepen as the nationalist Law and Justice government pushes through reforms that experts say threaten to undermine the constitutional independence of the judiciary and separation of powers. Warsaw’s parliament will this week debate contentious government proposals that would put the parliamentary majority indirectly in charge of appointing judges. Zbigniew Ziobro, the justice minister, would also gain powers to replace senior court officials.
