Prime Minister Alberto Otarola on [10 May] announced that the Government will propose to Congress —as a matter of urgency— a bill to reform Article 165 of the Constitution, so that the Armed Forces can support the Peruvian National Police at border regions. At a press conference, after a new session of the Council of Ministers, the Cabinet chief indicated that this decision is consistent with the constitutional mission of the Armed Forces. [...] Otarola underscored that the initiative seeks to add a paragraph to said article, "so that the Armed Forces can support the Police in monitoring the borders, in accordance with the law." "Thus, the Armed Forces are given a new constitutional mission: to deliver active support and monitor the borders along with the police. This is a sovereign decision of the Peruvian State, which is consistent with the decisions we have made on migration," he underlined.
