Nepal: PDCC asked to ensure Rights, role of women in constitution

<p>Women lawyers from Nepal Bar Association on Wednesday submitted a five-point proposition to Baburam Bhattarai, chairman of Political Dialogue and Consensus Committee (PDCC), to ensure increased rights and role of women in citizenship issuance process and policy making.</p><p>One of the chief propositions include removal of the proposed provision of issuing citizenship to a person only when both father and mother of the applicant are Nepali nationals. The provision, according to the women lawyers, is discriminatory against women. They said&nbsp; a foreign spouse of a Nepali man can be a Nepali citizen once she starts the process of relinquishing her foreign citizenship, but the foreigner husband of a Nepali woman has to wait for 15 years before he can have a naturalised citizenship.</p>
