Malaysia's prime minister promises constitutional amendment to increase representation for Sabah and Sarawak

The Fed­eral Con­sti­tu­tion will be amended to allow for greater rep­res­ent­a­tion of mem­bers of par­lia­ment from Sabah and Sarawak, said Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The Prime Min­is­ter said this is in line with what was prom­ised under the Malay­sia Agree­ment 1963 (MA63). “The addi­tion of par­lia­ment­ary seats is, of course, under the author­ity of the Elec­tion Com­mis­sion (EC). This means there may also be an increase in seats in Pen­in­su­lar Malay­sia, as well as addi­tional seats for Sabah and Sarawak,” he told a press con­fer­ence here after attend­ing the MA63 Imple­ment­a­tion Action Coun­cil meet­ing (MTPMA63). “However, the increase must not under­mine the prin­ciple that the ratio of rep­res­ent­a­tion for Sabah and Sarawak should be higher than it is at present.”
