Malaysia's government agrees to constitutional reform separating roles of attorney general and public prosecutor

The government has agreed in principle to fully separate the roles of the Attorney General (AG) and the Public Prosecutor (PP). Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said presented several separation models to the Cabinet before the decision was made. “The Cabinet has decided to implement a full separation, where both offices will exist as distinct and equal positions under the Federal Constitution,” she said in a statement. [ . . . ] To implement the reform, amendments will be drafted to Articles 145, 183 and 42 of the Federal Constitution to establish the PP as an independent authority.
