Liberia's law reform commission seeks review of bills before legislative vote

Liberia’s Law Reform Commission (LRC) is seeking a major change in the country’s lawmaking process that would require proposed legislation to undergo legal review before being submitted to the National Legislature for consideration. The proposal is contained in a draft National Law Reform Policy developed by the Commission and submitted to President Joseph Nyuma Boakai and the Cabinet for endorsement. [ . . . ] Varmah said the proposed National Law Reform Policy seeks to institutionalize legal review rather than allow such scrutiny to occur inconsistently. He said the policy was developed through consultations and has been submitted to President Boakai and the Cabinet. The Commission is expected to make a formal presentation to the Cabinet before a decision on endorsement. If adopted, the policy would introduce an additional legal review stage before proposed bills enter the legislative process.
