In Korea, lawmakers and experts debate constitutionality of prosecution reform bill

A heated debate erupted between experts and lawmakers over detailed reform proposals during a prosecution reform public hearing held at the National Assembly’s Legislation and Judiciary Committee. [ . . . ] The prosecution reform bill currently being pushed by the government and the ruling party centers on renaming the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office to the Public Prosecution Service, establishing a National Investigation Committee and a High-Profile Crime Investigation Agency, and separating investigative and prosecutorial powers. However, disagreements persist even within the ruling party over specifics, such as which ministry the new investigative agencies should fall under.
