Kiribati considers constitutional amendment restricting diplomatic relations

Kiribati looks set to usher through a bill that would amend its constitution to stop future governments from switching diplomatic recognition back to Taiwan. [ . . . ] "It doesn't mention Taiwan and China explicitly...but it's evident to anyone who knows about Kiribati's long history of switching between Taiwan and Beijing, that this now about cement and make permanent the relationship it has now with Beijing," says foreign affairs reporter Stephen Dziedzic. "The way it does this is by inserting a clause into the constitution of Kiribati to say that Kiribati can only establish relations with UN members."
