The EU’s new enlargement commissioner has said she expects North Macedonia to proceed to amend its constitution so that its accession process to the bloc can proceed.
“I expect North Macedonia to change its constitution, nothing more, nothing less. I think it is possible to achieve something like this,” said Slovenian Marta Kos, speaking after MEPs ratified the new European Commission.
Her remarks related to Bulgaria’s veto on the start of North Macedonia’s talks to join the European Union because of disputes over history and language.
The previous center-left government in North Macedonia agreed to add a reference to a Bulgarian ethnic minority in the constitution to break the impasse, but lacked the parliamentary majority to enact the change.
