The Ethiopian parliament is expected to approve a new legislation on Tuesday, according to a report by BBC Amharic. If approved, the Federal government will be able to extend interim regional administrations by up to two years.  Existing constitutional provision allows extension of only six months.  Based on precedents under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government, there is little or no doubt that the new legislation will be approved. Apart from extension of terms, the legislation is also shifting authority from the House of Federation to the House of People’s Representatives.  Extending terms of regional interim administrations used to be the jurisdiction of the House of Federation. The draft proposal that is set to be approved transfers power to the speaker of the House of People’s Representative.
