Objectives

Project Description: DDNRF - Canada. Activities to be undertaken through the DDN Project are mainly focused on the primary political objectives agreed to by both the interim government and the Maoists: the election of a Constituent Assembly with the mandate to draft a new Constitution. In order to support this objective, the DDN Project has been developed with three distinct components: 1) Developing Democracy in Nepal Responsive Facility-Canada: to support projects submitted by Canadian organizations with a proven track record and established local partnerships in Nepal; 2) Developing Democracy in Nepal Responsive Facility - Nepal: to support projects submitted by Nepalese NGOs and CBOs with a proven track record and established capacities; and c) Technical Assistance in Support of Democracy in Nepal: which will enable the project to respond to opportunities for support as they arise over the next twelve to twenty-four months. The proposed DDN project will provide CIDA with an important tool to support Nepal in its efforts to develop a sustainable democracy. It will capitalize on Canadian interests and capacity in the area of democratic development and build on local (Nepali) strengths to ensure sustainability of project interventions.Contribution of Gender Equality: At this stage of implementation, no comment can be made on this point.Expected Impact: Strengthened democratic processes in Nepal.Expected Outcomes: 1. Enhanced and informed participation by all sections of Nepali society, particularly women and socially excluded, in ongoing democratic processes leading to the election of a socially inclusive Constituent Assembly and drafting of a new constitution. 2. Improved media coverage of constitution and democratic issues related to the upcoming election and drafting of the Consortium. 3. Increased capacity of election officials to conduct peaceful, inclusive, unbiased elections.Expected Outputs: 1.1 Increased access by Nepalis, particularly women and the socially excluded, to information related to the upcoming Constituent Assembly elections, including its mandate, procedures and membership. 1.2 Increased awareness and ability of Nepalis, particularly women and the socially excluded, to participate in informed debate related to democracy and constitutional issues. 1.3 Nepalis, particularly women and the socially excluded, have increased understanding of and participation in the development of fair, peaceful and inclusive electoral practices. 2.1 Increased ability to communicate effectively unbiased election messages and facilitate informed public debate. 2.2 Increased media coverage on issues of concern to all sections of Nepali society, particularly women and the socially excluded, to rural and remote areas. 3.1 Increased access by the people, independent electoral bodies and the Government of Nepal to international/Canadian experience and technical knowledge on equitable democratic governance systems and process.Countries: Nepal (100%) Sectors: 015161 (80%), 015140 (20%) Themes: Good Governance
