Bolivia’s Congress voted on Tuesday to censure Economy Minister Jose Gabriel Espinoza, a decision President Rodrigo Paz’s government said was unconstitutional and signaled would be challenged before the country’s top constitutional tribunal. [ . . . ] The minister said on Tuesday that he would turn to the nation’s top constitutional tribunal to review the decision, arguing that procedures may have been violated.
Under Bolivia’s constitution, Paz has 24 hours to remove a censured minister from office. But the government argues the censure vote did not meet constitutional requirements and that the issue should be reviewed by the Constitutional Tribunal before Espinoza is removed.
The dispute raises the stakes in a confrontation between Paz and lawmakers at a delicate moment for his economic reform agenda.
