African Conference on Constitution building

With the entry into force of the Constitutive Act of the African Union in 2000 and the adoption of the Charter for Democracy, Elections and Good Governance in January 2007, Africa entered a new phase of constitutional development that was to be based on shared values and principles enshrined in the Act of the Union and its other relevant Declarations. Since then, the AU has taken more steps to promote constitutionalism on the Continent. It is in this context that it partnered with International IDEA and the Government of Benin to organize a Pan–African Conference on Constitution Building from 25-27 October in Cotonou, Benin bringing together delegates and constitutional experts from AU member states and other participants from Latin America, Asia and the Western Hemisphere.
