John Swinney has vowed to press ahead with his demands for a second independence referendum despite falling short of a majority at the Holyrood election.
The First Minister said Scotland must be given the power to hold another vote before Nigel Farage becomes Prime Minister in 2029, as polls suggest. [ . . . ] The First Minister previously said he would bring forward a Holyrood vote to “approve the development of a Section 30” on the first sitting day after the appointment of the new government.
This would give Scotland the power to hold an independence referendum, but it can only be granted by Westminster.
Asked if he will still push ahead with this, Mr Swinney said: "I certainly intend to carry on with my plans, yes."
