Brazil's senate revives proposed constitutional amendment lengthening terms and eliminating reelection for executive positions

New maneuvering in the Senate is reviving Constitutional Amendment Proposal (PEC) 12/2022, which discusses ending reelection and altering the term limits for presidents and other executive positions, with a direct impact on the electoral calendar, regional power struggles, and the strategies of Brazilian parties in potential future alliances and parliamentary renewal. [ . . . ] The expectation is that PEC 12/2022 will return to the Constitution and Justice Committee in the coming weeks for further evaluation. a movement which could unlock not only the debate on ending reelection for presidents, governors and mayors, but also the redefinition of term limits for executive and legislative positions. If it moves forward, the proposal will once again place the Senate at the center of the country's major political and institutional reforms. [ . . . ] Once the CCJ (Committee on Constitution, Justice and Citizenship) stage is complete, the proposal needs to be analyzed by the full Senate before proceeding to the Chamber of Deputies.
