In Thailand, parliament considers appointment procedure for constitution drafting body

A proposed “20-to-1” formula for choosing a constitution drafting panel is a compromise, not a violation of the Constitutional Court ruling, says Jaran Pakditanakul, a former charter court judge. The formula, backed by both the opposition People’s Party and the coalition-leading Bhumjaithai Party, would require 20 lawmakers to jointly nominate one Constitution Drafting Committee member. [ . . . ] He believes both majority and minority factions can accept it. For example, a party with 100 MPs would get five seats, while 200 MPs would yield 10; similarly, 200 senators could select 10 members. This, he said, preserves inclusivity and aligns with constitutional principles.
