Ecuador's parliament on Tuesday approved a revision of articles in the Constitution to allow the establishment of foreign military bases on the country's territory, a measure that still needs to be ratified by referendum. [ . . . ] The revision of the Constitution was approved by a majority of 82 MPs – out of a total of 151 – in a vote after the second and final debate in the plenary session.
This is a "decisive contribution to security", to the fight against "transnational crime" and "to the restoration of peace in Ecuadorian territory", claimed the national delegation of Ecuador through X.
The Constitutional Court is now called upon to examine and approve the text of the revision, which will then be put to a referendum that President Noboa must call within 45 days, according to the current Constitution, which came into force in 2008.
