Premier of Turks and Caicos Islands says adding at large seats for next elections necessary for constitutional change

Premier Washington Misick said adding four elected members to the All-Island constituency retains equality of opportunity for parties and candidates alike. He said it will put political parties on an equal footing irrespective of their current parliamentary strength or support among the electorate, and also equal opportunity for non-party affiliated persons who may wish to vie for them. [ . . . ] Premier Misick said that at the heart of the current contention is whether we accept the prospect of [ . . . ] initially agreeing to a parliament with an expanded at large membership and a change to the constitution, or continue down the pathway of no change or limited change. He said the real prize on offer is a fully-elected House of Assembly immediately, adding that the opposition leader wishes to delay a full elected house potentially for another five years.
