In South Sudan, transitional legislature re-passes constitution-making process bill

The national parliament has re-passed the final reading stage of the disputed constitution-making process bill, 2022. [...] In July, a section of the parliament unilaterally passed the bill in the absence of SPLM-IO lawmakers who were boycotting sittings at the time. [...] According to the peace deal, the draft bill is expected to guide the establishment of a legal framework to govern the permanent constitution-making process. It also aims to guarantee good governance, constitutionalism, rule of law, human rights, and gender equality as key benchmarks for the conduct of general elections by the end of the transitional period. The National Constitutional Amendment Committee was established in line with the 2015 peace deal to spearhead constitutional amendments in the country.
