The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, has vetoed the parliamentary diploma decriminalising euthanasia on the grounds that it is unconstitutional.
This decision was announced through a note on the Presidency’s official website, about two hours after the Constitutional Court announced that it had declared the bill, under which the anticipation of medically assisted death is not punishable and so amending the Criminal Code, as unconstitutional, for “insufficient normative density”, following a request for a preventive review by Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
“Following the ruling of the Constitutional Court on Monday, the President of the Republic returned the bill to parliament, without promulgation.
