The term of the Haitian parliament expires today with no replacements in place for the lower chamber of deputies and locally-elected positions and one-third of the senate. This has resulted from the inability to hold elections in November due to the instability caused by massive opposition to President Jovenel Moise. Given the country’s deeply unstable situation, the prospect of Moise ruling by decree could become a new flashpoint for even greater turmoil than Haitians have experienced over the past year and a half.
