Lawsuits challenge constitutionality of Puerto Rican Governor's appointment

Puerto Rican courts will determine the legitimacy of de facto Governor Pedro R. Pierluisi, contested on Monday by San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz Soto and Senate President Thomas Rivera Schatz. Cruz Soto, pre-candidate for governor for the opposition Popular Democratic Party (PDP), and Rivera Schatz, acting president of the New Progressive Party (NPP), filed judicial appeals in the Supreme Court of Puerto Rico and in the Court of First Instance in which the legitimacy of the governor is questioned.
