Botswana considers amending constitution to allow direct election of President

Johannesburg, South Africa (ADV) – Botswana is said to be mulling towards amending its constitution, the African Daily Voice has learnt. According to The Monitor, last week, Botswana Parliament passed a motion calling for the review of the Constitution in order to make a provision for the direct election of the state President. It is reported that the motion requesting the government to amend the constitution to allow direct election of the President and for appointment of ministers from candidates outside Parliament was tabled by Polson Majaga, a Member of Parliament for Nata-Gweta. Majaga is quoted in the media suggesting that, “as electorates vote for members of Parliament they are directly voting in the President which is not democratic, I would like to call that there may be direct election of the President and not use the current system”.
