Australian Prime Minister flags constitutional change to include an indigenous voice to parliament

The Referendum Council, set up in 2015 to advise Malcolm Turnbull and Bill Shorten on constitutional recognition for indigenous Australians, canvassed the proposal during a meeting with the pair on Monday. It also follows on from the Uluru Statement, released in May, where indigenous leaders called for a constitutionally enshrined “voice” to Parliament. “What ... all Australians are being presented with if this was to go to a referendum, would be one option which is a constitutionally entrenched advisory body, an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voice, to the Australian Parliament,” Mr Turnbull said.
