Pakistan issues a Bill amending Constitution and granting official status to four regional languages

Pakistan Senate's Standing Committee on Law and Justice on Wednesday passed "The Constitutional (Amendment) Bill, 2016" granting status of national language to four regional languages: Punjabi, Sindhi, Pashto and Balochi. All these languages, along with Urdu, will be now indicated in Article 251(1) of the Constitution of Pakistan. In a later phase of the Constitution review process, there are plans to propose a similar bill seeking granting national status to Balochi, Balti, Brohvi, Punjabi, Pashto, Shina, Sindhi and Seraiki.
