Behind the Gap: constitutional recognition for Australia’s first peoples

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>The Australian constitution does not recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders as the nation's first people.&nbsp;<span style="line-height: 20.3999996185303px;">Since 2007, there has been a bipartisan commitment to hold a referendum on constitutional recognition.&nbsp;</span><span style="line-height: 20.3999996185303px;">In spite of strong support, there is still no agreement about how that change to the Constitution will look.&nbsp;</span><span style="line-height: 20.3999996185303px;">Some have argued that Indigenous people should be acknowledged in a preamble, while others have called for constitutional protection from racial discrimination.</span></p><p><strong>A history of failed recognition</strong></p>
