"Declaration of the Fundamental Principles of the New Egyptian State" released

<p class="p1">On Tuesday 1 November 2011, the Egyptian government presented to a closed meeting of around 500 political activists its latest draft of a document entitled the “Declaration of the Fundamental Principles of the New Egyptian State” (<a href="/files/2011.11_-_constitutional_principles_document_english.pdf">English</a> and <a href="/files/2011.11_-_constitutional_principles_document_arabic.pdf">Arabic</a>).&nbsp; More than two dozen drafts of this document have already been produced; many previous versions were referred to as the “supra-constitutional principles document”.&nbsp; This current drafts seeks to establish a number of fundamental constitutional principles that any future constituent assembly will have to abide by when drafting or amending the constitution.&nbsp; The current draft also sets out a number of rules that are to be used to select the constituent assembly’s members and to guide the constitutional process.&nbsp;</p><p>
