South Sudan drops Abyei from Interim Constitution

<p>Southern Sudan has refrained from including the oil-rich region of Abyei as part of its territory. Tensions reportedly flared up between North and South Sudan after the latter issued a draft transitional constitution laying claims to the region. This prompted northern officials to threaten to break their earlier promises to recognize South Sudan independence which was gained via a referendum held in January as part of peace deal signed in 2005 to end the Sudanese conflict.
