Africa: constitution-building vs coup-making

<p>The <span style="font-style: italic;">coup d'état</span> was a common device of regime-change in post-independence Africa. The failures of governance of post-independence states even led some observers to see the coup as in some circumstances a necessary evil - when it removed a predatory and autocratic regime, and could be regarded as facilitating a transition to democracy.
