In Malaysia, government considers proposal for king-appointed prosecutor in institutional reform package

The government is considering a proposal for the public prosecutor to be appointed by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong upon the advice of the Judicial and Legal Service Commission, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said. [ . . . ] The separation of the AG and public prosecutor roles has long been a key institutional reform pursued by the ruling Pakatan Harapan coalition. Earlier this month, Azalina said the government plans to table constitutional amendments and an omnibus bill — the Law Reform (Public Prosecutor) Bill — to amend the Criminal Procedure Code and 18 other related laws to facilitate the separation.
